Maharashtra Extends HSRP Deadline for Pre-2019 Vehicles to November 30; Strict Action from December

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Transport Department has extended the deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, to November 30, 2025, providing significant relief to vehicle owners across the state.

The earlier deadline was August 15, but Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar approved the extension on Thursday, calling it the “final opportunity” for compliance. The move follows widespread complaints about limited fitment centers and logistical delays, particularly in rural areas.

From December 1, 2025, strict enforcement will begin. Vehicles found without HSRPs after this date will face legal action, with special squads deployed across Maharashtra. Detained vehicles will not be released until plates are installed.

Owners with confirmed installation appointments before the November 30 deadline will be exempt from penalties. HSRPs, which are tamper-proof and carry a unique identification number, enhance road safety and aid crime prevention.

The Transport Department has instructed all RTOs to launch awareness campaigns in partnership with vehicle dealers and transport associations. Post-deadline, non-compliant vehicles may face additional restrictions, including denial of re-registration, suspension of permit renewals, and blocking of ownership transfers.

Officials stressed that no further extensions are likely, urging owners to meet the new deadline to avoid penalties and service disruptions.
