Mumbai: Maharashtra Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane has urged the preparation of a time-bound action plan for desilting lakes to enhance freshwater fish production. Speaking at a review meeting on the fishing season at Mantralaya, Rane highlighted that the state has already recorded a 47% increase in fish yield this season, with further growth expected.
He stressed that the desilting programme should be coordinated with the Water Resources Department and accompanied by strict action against lake encroachments and illegal activities. Rane also called for accelerating the “Plastic-Free Koliwada” initiative, promoting domestic fish sales in view of additional US tariffs, and training assistant commissioners in AI.
Other directives included organising a Fish and Prawn Food Festival and drafting a roadmap to boost prawn production.
