New Delhi : High drama unfolded in the national capital today as Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with several other INDIA bloc MPs, were detained by Delhi Police during a protest march against alleged voter roll irregularities.
The march, which began from Parliament towards the Election Commission (EC) headquarters, was halted near Transport Bhawan with heavy police barricades. Senior opposition figures, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sharad Pawar, and Akhilesh Yadav—who was seen jumping over a barricade—took part in the rally, raising slogans of “vote chor” (vote thieves).
The protest was triggered by the EC’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, which the opposition claims is aimed at deleting genuine voters and manipulating the upcoming polls in favour of the ruling BJP.
Speaking before his detention, Rahul Gandhi said the demonstration was “not a political protest but a fight to protect the Constitution and the right to vote.” Police later escorted the detained leaders to nearby stations in buses.
The Election Commission has denied all allegations, stating that the revision process was conducted as per the rules to ensure accuracy in the voter list.
The confrontation highlights escalating political tensions ahead of key state elections, with the INDIA bloc intensifying its campaign over what it calls a direct threat to electoral integrity.
