Mumbai : Mumbai’s Akhil Chandanwadi Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, which began in 1978 and is now in its 48th year, has become famous for its special way of honoring Lord Ganesha. Known affectionately as the “Sweet Ganpati” or “God Ganpati,” the idol’s nickname comes from a touching story of faith and gratitude.
Years ago, a devotee vowed to offer sugar to Ganpati if his wish came true. When it did, he fulfilled his promise by covering the idol with sugar. The act inspired others, and over time, it became a cherished part of the festival.
To maintain hygiene while keeping the tradition alive, the mandal collects the sugar offerings and uses them in two ways—mixing some with colorful gulal to shower the idol during immersion, and distributing the rest as prasad along with coconuts to local residents the next day.
This sweet ritual has become more than just an offering—it’s now a symbol of the community’s devotion, unity, and festive spirit.
