Mumbai : Nine police constables from Thane Police Headquarters have been suspended over serious lapses during the escort of seven undertrial prisoners from Thane Central Jail to Kalwa’s Civic Hospital on August 4.
A departmental inquiry found multiple security breaches, including unrestrained inmates, poor supervision, and officers distracted by mobile phones. At one point, only five of the seven prisoners were accounted for, with misleading explanations initially given to superiors. The missing inmates were later found around 3:50 p.m.
The suspended officers are Gangaram Ghule, Girish Patil, Vilas Mohite, Kishore Shirke, Ashok Munde, Sandeep Kharat, Sunil Nikalje, Bharat Jaybhay, and Vikram Jambure. Authorities have termed the negligence a serious violation of protocol.
