Mumbai: The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has proposed an innovative ropeway project to connect the Aarey Metro Station (Line 3) with Goregaon’s Film City, with the possibility of extending it further to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP).
The planned ropeway will cover a distance of around 2 to 3 kilometers and is expected to carry 2,000 to 3,000 passengers per hour in each direction. It aims to offer fast and eco-friendly last-mile connectivity for commuters, Film City workers, and tourists, helping to ease congestion in the area.
The project is to be implemented under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, using Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer (DBFOT) guidelines. Depending on the terrain and environmental sensitivity, the ropeway could use mono-cable, bi-cable, or tri-cable detachable gondola technology.
Officials say the proposed system will not only boost public transportation options but also preserve the ecological balance in the surrounding Aarey and SGNP areas by limiting the need for road-based construction.
If approved and implemented, this would become Mumbai’s first urban ropeway, enhancing connectivity between the metro network and key city destinations while supporting sustainable transport goals.
