Mumbai : Two prominent civil society bodies — Petition Group led by Mr. Kamlakar Shenoy and Alert Citizens Group headed by Mr. Qaid Zoher Mithaiwala — have come out strongly against the illegal construction of a transit shed at MRA Marg Service Road, Annasaheb Daundkar Marg, Mumbai.
Local residents, business owners, and commuters have expressed deep concern over the construction, which they claim violates a BMC circular dated 14.12.1999 and several rulings by the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court of India.
The groups allege that the construction amounts to encroachment and public obstruction, being carried out under the very watch of the Municipal Commissioner and Additional Municipal Commissioner. They further highlight that it is in clear violation of Article 12 of the Indian Constitution, which mandates the BMC to act against such unlawful encroachments.
The unauthorized shed has reportedly caused severe traffic congestion, noise pollution, and unhygienic conditions, adversely impacting the daily lives and health of citizens, especially tax-paying residents and local businesses.
“What is deeply troubling,” stated Mr. Shenoy, “is that the very authorities meant to enforce the law are seen violating it, setting a dangerous precedent for governance.”
In response, BMC has called for a public meeting to be held on 5th August 2025 at 3 PM at the A Ward Municipal Office, inviting residents, media personnel, and stakeholders to voice their concerns and work toward a solution.
The Alert Citizens Group urges journalists, editors, and digital media representatives to attend and report on the outcome of the meeting.
“Good governance is our birthright!” the groups asserted.
