Mumbai : For the first time this monsoon season, three major dams supplying Mumbai—Tansa, Vaitarna, and Bhatsa—have overflowed as of July 24, 2025. Normally, these reservoirs reach capacity in August or September, but heavy rains have accelerated the process .

All three are located in Shahapur taluka, Thane district. Tansa Dam’s overflow gates opened, releasing an outflow of approximately 1,278 cusecs. This surge follows robust rainfall across the region, which has helped raise dam levels by about 138 meters .

Earlier this month, on July 9, another key reservoir—Modak Sagar (Lower Vaitarna)—reached overflow status, marking it as the first of the season . As of the morning of July 23, Mumbai’s collective water storage across seven lakes stood at approximately 86.9%, a substantial rise from 53.1% last year and 50.2% in 2023 .

What this means for Mumbai:

With the reservoirs filling ahead of the monsoon peak, the city’s water security is significantly improved.

Authorities are advising alertness in downstream communities as excess water is being released.

Stay tuned for further updates as the rainy season continues.
