Mumbai Braces for 48 Hours of Heavy Rainfall; IMD Warns of Thunderstorms and Waterlogging

Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in Mumbai over the next 48 hours, accompanied by strong winds and potential thunderstorms.

The downpour is expected to intensify gradually, with hot and humid conditions prevailing during the day and rain or thunderstorms likely in the evenings. Cloudy skies and moderate showers are expected to continue throughout the week, with temperatures ranging between 25°C and 32°C, and humidity levels soaring up to 90%.

Heavy rains have already led to waterlogging and traffic congestion across parts of the city. The Andheri Subway was temporarily shut down for safety reasons due to water accumulation.

Tide forecasts for July 20 predict a high tide around 7:30 AM and a low tide at 1:00 PM. The overlap of high tide and heavy rainfall could increase waterlogging risks in low-lying areas like Dadar, Andheri, Kurla, and Sion.

Sea conditions remain slightly rough, and authorities advise against visiting beaches during high tide due to strong waves and safety concerns.

Encouragingly, the city’s water reservoirs have reached 81.86% capacity, storing approximately 11.84 lakh million litres of water, thanks to recent rains in catchment areas.

Authorities urge residents to stay alert, carry umbrellas, avoid flood-prone zones during peak rain hours, and refrain from going to beaches during high tides.
