Mumbai : In a major crackdown on international drug trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Mumbai Zonal Unit seized 42.34 kg of high-grade hydroponic cannabis worth ₹42 crore from two passengers who arrived from Bangkok at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
Based on specific intelligence, DRI officials intercepted the suspects soon after their arrival and conducted a detailed examination of their baggage. The search revealed 21 packets of hydroponic weed cleverly concealed inside food items like noodle and biscuit packets. Field testing confirmed the substance as cannabis of superior quality.
This operation follows another major seizure by DRI-Mumbai just days earlier, when officials recovered 4.7 kg of cocaine valued at ₹47 crore. Combined, the two busts have led to the confiscation of drugs worth nearly ₹90 crore within three days.
Hydroponic cannabis — cultivated using water-based, nutrient-rich solutions instead of soil — is known for its high potency and is in great demand in international markets.
Authorities said investigations are underway to trace the entire network behind this smuggling attempt, including financiers, handlers, and distributors. Officials also noted that Mumbai Airport continues to be a key transit point for global narcotics trafficking, prompting tighter surveillance and enhanced coordination between agencies.
