2026 Delhi–Mumbai Freight Corridor Expected to Bring Major Relief to Ghodbunder Road Traffic

Mumbai : Heavy-vehicle congestion on Thane’s busy Ghodbunder Road is expected to drop significantly once the Delhi–Mumbai Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) becomes operational in March 2026, according to Thane MP Naresh Mhaske.

At a review meeting held with officials from the PWD, MMRDA, Thane Police, and local civic bodies, Mhaske stated that a large share of container trucks currently using Ghodbunder Road—especially those heading toward JNPT—will shift to the freight corridor. This diversion is expected to ease traffic pressure and improve travel time for commuters.

During the meeting, authorities raised ongoing issues such as potholes, uneven stretches, and the need for repairs on flyovers and service roads. Mhaske instructed all departments to complete pending work by December 10, stressing the need for immediate improvements.

He also highlighted the importance of resolving the long-pending road link between Khanivade and Amane, which would offer an additional route for heavy vehicles and reduce congestion further. Discussions with the National Highways Authority of India are underway to fast-track this connection.

Traffic officials urged residents to report issues such as traffic jams and auto-rickshaw violations through the MahaTraffic Police app to help manage the situation more efficiently.

Local citizen groups also presented demands related to water supply, sanitation, and internal road conditions, prompting authorities to promise better coordination across departments to address long-standing concerns
